Yeast Feast
A 3D First Person Simulator. Navigate a submarine bakery in the deep-sea. Collect the Deep-sea yeast by following bubbles. Drive, Collect, Bake and FEED……
Project Background
Yeast Feast project was started during the 2025 Global Game Jam, designed and developed by Jerry Zhang (Yunhua Zhang) and Alexander Su.
The theme for the Jam was ‘Bubbles’ and Jerry has always wanted to make a submarine game after seeing the brilliant design of Iron Lung.
Further inspired by Alex’s roommate, Johnny, who was preparing the yeast for bread baking, we decided to combine submarine navigation with baking simulation.
Players are placed inside a submarine in the deep sea to collect ancient yeast by following the bubbles. They then process the yeast into bread. As days go by, the truth of the submarine gradually reveals.
The game was not entirely finished during the Jam. Some more days were spent on making animation and game loops.
Production
Yeast Feast has a simple structure and is made entirely out of Unreal Engine 5.
Jerry was responsible for the art, design and sound while Alex was responsible for programming and animation using blueprints.
The design was rather well executed and we eventually produced a complete game loop. Players will repeat the game loop for 5-6 times to reach the ending.
The art production explored shaders and post processing volumes, especially a pixelation effect that unified the visual performance. It was a memorable experience building the interior of the submarine, though players claim that the submarine is “unrealistically spacious”
The soundscape was carefully designed, from the SFX of pulling the steering wheel to the SFX of deep-sea whale, which brought an uncanny vibe to the gameplay.
The animation for baking the bread was especially challenging, especially the simulation of pouring water from containers.
The narrative centered thalassophobia and the fear of the unkown. A “Cthulhu-like” ending is hence designed, justifying the yeast collection process.
